A method of in-band management using L2 MAC addresses over a B-VLAN (Backbone-Virtual Local Area Network) in an SPBm (Shortest Path Bridging MAC) network is described. The method comprises: configuring 202, at one or more processors, e.g. switches or Backbone Edge Bridges, BEBs (Figure 1), a VLAN mapped to an in-band management ISID (I-Component Service ID); adding 204, at the one or more processors, a port to the VLAN, wherein the port is coupled to a network management system (102, Figure 1), allocating 206, at the one or more processors, a base VLAN MAC address based on a chassis/device MAC address; sending 210, from the one or more processors, a G-ARP (Gratuitous Address Resolution Protocol) message; and encapsulating and forwarding 212 one or more L3 packets received from the management system using a MAC-inMAC header on the in-band management ISID. The encapsulation may comprise adding an encapsulation header having source and destination MAC addresses, a BVLAN and a management ISID. The method may also comprise configuring 206 an IP subset associated with the network management system.
|
