An encoder element (4), made of magnetizable polymer e.g. elastoferrite, presents an encoding zone (6) provided with at least one polarization mark that is protected by a protective layer (10). The protective layer has a thin layer of material deposited by plasma directly on encoder element and secured to encoder element. The protective layer covers at least the encoding zone of encoder element. The encoder element is over molded onto radial collar (9) of a sleeve (2) and secured by direct bonding. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device with a rotary shaft and a displacement encoder; and (2) a method of fabricating a displacement encoder.
