An apparatus and method thereof, for estimating a rate of cuttings removal or possibly a flow velocity from a borehole 2, comprising a first 3 and second 6 property measurement device to measure a property derivable from mass of drilling fluid, one device located upstream, one located downstream, determining a difference between the first and second properties over a period of time to obtain an estimate of the rate of cuttings removal or possibly a flow velocity. The apparatus and method may furthermore incorporate a computer device 10 (fig 6), arranged to determine a difference between first and second properties over a period of time to obtain an estimate of rate of cuttings removal. The apparatus and method may incorporate means for detection of a kick in a flow of drilling fluid. |
