[Class 135] [See also Group I] A valve fitting for controlling the directions of flow in a watersoftener for the operations of softening, regeneration, backflushing, and draining, comprises three valves 15, 16 and 17 controlling communication by way of internal passages in the valve body between connections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to the hard water supply, the top of the softener, the bottom of the softener, the soft water supply, and the drain, respectively. In the normal operation of the softener the valves are in the closed positions as shown and the water passes from the connection 1, through the port 6 to the connection 2 and the top of the softener, from the bottom of the softener to the connection 3 and through the port 10 to the soft water supply connection 4, the passages 9, 13 and 23 being closed by the valves 15, 16 and 17 respectively. For back-flushing, the valves 15 and 17 are opened, the plunger 18 on valve 15 closing the port 6 and directing the water through passage 9 and port 11 to the bottom of the softener, the water entering from the top of the softener at 2 and passing to the drain through passage 7 and valve 17. To drain the softener prior to regeneration, the valve 16 is also opened, the plunger 20 closing the port 11 and shutting off the hard water from the passage 9, whilst the softener drains from the bottom through connection 3, valve 16 and passage 13 to the drain. The valves 15 and 17 are then closed for the regeneration and washing out so that the direction of flow through the softener is normal whilst the salt cap for the regeneration is replaced, the draining continuing through the valve 16. The valve 16 is then closed again for the normal operation of the softener to be resumed. Adjustable flow regulators may be incorporated in the fitting, for example the plug 24 controlling the rate of flow into the passage 9 when the valve 15 is opened. Modifications are described in which two valves only are used, the valves carrying one or more plungers or rings, such as 18 and 20, controlling ports for directing the flow through the passages in the valve body to effect the various operations as above.</p> |
