Production of a metallic component comprises: heat treating to harden the component, in which a heating process is carried out with a tempering or structure conversion step at a prescribed temperature; machining the component at room temperature to bring it to the desired geometrical shape; and heating the component to a temperature which is higher than room temperature. Preferred Features: Heating of the component in the final step is carried out in an oven using infrared radiation in air or protective gas atmosphere or held in a salt bath. Heating in the final step is carried out at 50-400 degreesC. The component is made from a metallic alloy with interstitially dissolved atoms, especially a carbon- and/or nitrogen-alloyed steel. |
