The present invention provides a cosmetic composition including 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6-methoxy-1-oxo-beta-carboline for whitening the skin. The cosmetic composition according to the present invention inhibits the generation of a protein, myosin Va, which is a carrier of a minute organ, melanosome, melanin-generating cells, so that the movement of melanin is inhibited and the movement thereof to a keratin-generating cell is ultimately inhibited. Accordingly, excellent whitening effects can be exhibited.
