An apparatus and method for outputting audio are provided. According to the present invention, the method for outputting audio in the audio output apparatus comprises the steps of: calculating a temperature value of a voice coil of the audio output apparatus using a preset heat transfer model algorithm when power is supplied to the voice coil; adjusting an output level of an audio signal by determining a gain value to adjust the output level of the audio signal according to the calculated temperature value of the voice coil; and outputting the audio signal with the adjusted output level. Accordingly, the audio output apparatus can control a gain value differently according to variation of the temperature of the voice coil while protecting the voice coil from overheating, thereby outputting an audio signal with sound quality higher than a predetermined level.
