PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for determining whether platens are parallel or substantially parallel or not when in a cooking position.SOLUTION: A two-sided cooking device is provided that determines whether an upper cooking platen 22 and a lower cooking platen 14 are substantially parallel to each other when in a cooking position. In addition, the method and device are capable of identifying a type of food item placed on the lower cooking platen 14 of a two-sided cooking grill.
