447,672. Thermostats. VAPOR CAR HEATING CO., Inc., Railway Exchange Building, Chicago, U.S.A. Jan. 17, 1936, No. 1564. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1935. [Class 64 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVII] In a thermostat of the mercury column type, a glass bulb 1 communicates with a fine tube 4 carrying contacts 5, 6 connected to external metal rings 7, 8. An auxiliary bulb 12 is connected to the bulb 1 and is enclosed in a casing 15. Heat is supplied to the bulb 12 by a resistance 16 fed by a separate source 18 through an adjustable rheostat 17, so that the mercury is displaced by a constant amount due to this heating. The temperature to which the bulb 1 must be subjected in order to close the contacts 5, 6 may therefore be set to the desired value. Other types of heating or cooling may be employed within the casing 15. |
