<PICT:0448898/IV/1> Crude methanol is purified by supplying it together with or mixed with water to a rapidly rotating centrifuge and, after thorough mixing, separating the upper oily layer. The methanol and water are supplied continuously, through measuring means D1, D2 respectively, to a centrifuge Z having a speed of 6000 revs./min. and so adjusted that pure oil flows from one outlet to a container L and a mixture of methanol and water from the other to a mixer M into which purifying agents such as potassium permanganate or zinc chloride are introduced. The mixture flows to distillation columns K1, K2. The oil may be worked up by treatment with hydrogen at high pressures to yield a mixture of hydrocarbons for use as a motor fuel. In an example, each part by volume of methanol, obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of CO at, say, 200 atm. is mixed with amounts of water varying between 1 and 2 volumes and centrifuged. |
