PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine with a more powerful heater even when the machine is used where there is a limited power supply available.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method of operating a beverage preparation machine. The beverage preparation machine is of a type comprising a preparation part and comprises: a reservoir to contain water; a delivery head for receiving in use a cartridge containing one or more beverage ingredients; a pump for pumping water from the reservoir to the delivery head; a primary heater for heating the water contained in the reservoir; a secondary heater between the reservoir and the delivery head; and a controller for controlling energization of the primary heater and the secondary heater. The controller operates to prevent energization of the primary heater simultaneous with energization of the secondary heater. Also disclosed are an apparatus for implementing the method, and methods and apparatus utilizing first and second preparation parts.
