A method for the identification of microorganisms in a sample, particularly a complex sample such as a mixed culture, comprises comparing a mass spectrum of the sample MS with reference mass spectra of known microorganisms REF in a database DB, wherein at least one reference spectrum is subtracted from the mass spectrum MS of the sample to form a difference spectrum DS, and the difference spectrum DS thus produced is compared with the reference spectra REF. The microorganisms of the difference spectrum DS are regarded as identified in the sample if the reference spectrum REF of this microorganism sufficiently matches the difference spectrum DS, e.g. if the similarity indicator of the difference spectrum DS is greater than a specified minimum value. |
