PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably sample a sheet by a vertical twin roll type casting method for an aluminum-silicon alloy. SOLUTION: In the twin roll type vertical casting apparatus, a composite material obtained by mixing an aluminum-silicon alloy with silicon carbide powder or an aluminum-silicon alloy having a silicon content of >7% is produced into a sheet. The apparatus includes: a pair of water-cooled rotary rolls 12, 14 made of copper and confronted at intervals or made of mild steel and in which the parts to be contacted with molten metal have a thickness of≤10 mm; and a gate 20 for receiving molten metal 16 onto the water-cooled rotary rolls 12, 14. The gate 20 is composed of: two planar main gates 22, 24 parallel to the rotary shafts 12A, 14A of the water-cooled rotary rolls 12, 14; and horizontal gates 42, 44 connecting the edges of the main gates 22, 24. The lower edges of the main gates 22, 24 are contacted with the surfaces of the water-cooled rotary rolls 12, 14 or form a gap of≤2 mm, and the side faces of the horizontal gates 42, 44 are contacted with the surfaces of the water-cooled rotary rolls 12, 14 or form a gap of≤2 mm.
