The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle (10) having a rear axle steering system (12), comprising the following steps: providing data that characterise an actuation of a front axle steering system (14) of the motor vehicle (10) and a motor vehicle movement by means of a sensor unit (16) of the motor vehicle (10); receiving the data by means of a control unit (18) of the motor vehicle (10); ascertaining a course of a transverse jerk of the motor vehicle (10) to be expected based upon the data by means of the control unit (18); determining whether the ascertained course of the transverse jerk to be expected exceeds a predetermined threshold value for the transverse jerk by means of the control unit (18); and changing a rear axle steering angle of the rear axle steering system (12) of the motor vehicle (10) by means of the control unit (18) if the course of the ascertained transverse jerk to be expected exceeds the predetermined threshold value. The invention further relates to a device for carrying out the method.
