PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminaire employing an organic EL panel which realizes a self-diagnostic function without using a dedicated optical sensor, and an illumination control method. SOLUTION: In a luminaire 1 of the present invention, when electric power is supplied to a first input unit 411 via a first driver 31 to cause a first organic EL panel group 41 to function as lighting means, a controller 2 makes a second organic EL panel group 42 function as an optical sensor by receiving electric power which is generated in second organic EL panels by converting received light into electricity, via a second output unit 422. Then, when the controller 2 determines by using the optical sensor function performed by the second organic EL panel group 42 that the functionality as lighting means of the first organic EL panel group 41 has degraded, it switches the lighting means to the second organic EL panel group 42.
