[Class 74 (ii)] An elastic weft thread is fed in at spaced courses and is knitted alone at spaced wales without being plated by a textile thread, the body of the knitted article being constituted by ordinary textile threads. When a certain number of plain courses have been knitted the last plain course is suspended from the shanks of the needles 2, the knitted courses being supported by the comb 5 whilst the sinkers 4 engage above the knitted courses. After feeding in an elastic weft thread 1 the needles 2 are lowered whilst simultaneously pressing means such as presser fingers 3 act on the beards of certain needles after the beards have enclosed the elastic thread and thus on these needles the loops of the previous course ride over the pressed beards, whilst the previously formed loops together with the elastic thread, move into the beards of the unpressed needles. The pressers fingers are then disengaged from the needles which continue to descend. The sinkers 4 are then advanced whilst the needles descend again, to cause the needles which were pressed to draw stitch loops such as 11, of the elastic thread. Finally, the sinkers are retracted and, as the needles ascend, resume their initial position. This sequence of operations is followed by a normal course of textile loops. Different effects may be obtained by varying the number and arrangement of fingers 3. For ornamental purposes, the elastic weft may be fed in under tension. The elastic loops may be staggered in successive elastic wefts, by longitudinal displacement of the bar carrying the presser fingers. To inhibit laddering upon breaking of an elastic weft, in one of the courses preceding the insertion of an elastic weft, the loop 10 of the needle which will knit a loop 11 from the elastic thread is transferred back to the adjacent needle. The fabric may replace a rubber band in the tops of stockings &c., and may-be used for ordinary or orthopµdic hosiery or the like. |
