PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a melanin precursor, by which the melanin precursor can efficiently be produced in a high yield, while accurately grasping a reaction end point, and to provide a method for determining the reaction end point of the melanin precursor to efficiently obtain the melanin precursor in a high yield on the production of the melanin precursor. SOLUTION: The method for reacting a substrate compound such as DOPA with an enzyme having a catechol oxidase activity or a microorganism containing the enzyme to produce a melanin precursor is characterized by including (1) a process for supplying an alkali or acid to a reaction solution to maintain the pH of the reaction solution to 5 to 6, and (2) a process for detecting the temporal change of at least one selected from the group consisting of (a) the pH of the reaction solution, (b) the difference ([O<SB>2</SB>absorption amount-CO<SB>2</SB>generation amount]) between the O<SB>2</SB>absorption amount and CO<SB>2</SB>generation amount in the reaction system, and (c) the dissolved oxygen amount in the reaction solution in real time, and (3) finishing the reaction, while using the change of the temporal change trend of at least one of (a) to (c) as an index.
