摘要 The present invention relates to a communication system and methods of use thereof. The system includes sets of complementary radios for transmitting and receiving signals to achieve high reliability and reduced costs. The sets of complementary radios are in wireless communication with each other. A new connection is made by selecting from amongst the complementary radios. Switching between complementary radios during a connection is also permitted. Optimized protocols and hardware for implementing the system are disclosed.

A method for forming and maintaining a connection in a communication system comprising: providing a base node comprising a first set of radios for transmitting and receiving signals, wherein the first set of radios comprises a plurality of radios optimized for different performance objectives; providing a peripheral node comprising a second set of radios for transmitting and receiving signals, wherein the second set of radios comprises a plurality of radios optimized for different performance objectives, and wherein the base node and the peripheral node are constructed and arranged to wirelessly connect via both the first set and second set of radios; selecting a performance objective for the peripheral node, the base node, and/or the wireless connection from a plurality of available performance objectives, said plurality of available performance objectives including at least two of: reduced power consumption, reduced interference to other devices, increased channel capacity to support many parallel connections, or increased reliability of new connection; activating the wireless connection between the base node and the peripheral node by selecting radios from the first set and the second set based on the performance objective; and switching to different radios from the first set and/or the second set to improve aggregate wireless link performance with respect to the performance objective.
