Assignment acknowledgement for a wireless communication system

A method, apparatus, and channel structure for acknowledging assignment messages is provided. The method and apparatus allow for efficient signaling based upon the resources.

1. An apparatus comprising:
at least one processor configured to
determine a message type for a message that is being acknowledged;assign a channel identification based upon the message type, wherein the channel identification comprises a numerical identifier of one of a plurality of numerical identifiers that range from a lowest to a highest numerical value; andmap an acknowledgment to resources for a signaling channel that punctures traffic channels based upon the channel identification; and a memory coupled to the at least one processor, wherein the acknowledgment corresponds to the message that is being acknowledged, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to assign the highest available channel identification to acknowledgements of assignment messages, and wherein at least two channel identifications are available.
