A surgical shield is disclosed. The shield includes one or more walls including at least one substantially smooth surface (13). The one or more walls individually or collectively form at least one substantially elongate member. At least one attachment means (14) directly or indirectly attached to the one or more walls is used to secure the shield in position during a surgery. The shield may be curved in length and/or width and have notches or other formations to more readily conform to the underlying structures it is pined to. The Shield may also include embedded wires to assist in keeping a desired shape when deformed to better fit the anatomy required. Of particular note is the protection of iliac veins during an anterior spinal fusion procedure. |
