A retention device 10 for a vehicle luggage compartment includes a latch unit 12 mountable to a surface in the compartment and a clip 14. The latch unit 12 has a socket 82 into which the clip 14 can be inserted and a latch 24 that engages with the clip 14 to lock the clip to the unit. The latch 24 can be selectively moved to an unlatched position by a user to allow the clip 14 to be removed from the socket. The latch unit 12 may have a magnetic arrangement for drawing the latch 24 towards and holding the latch in a latched position. A number of latch units 12 may be located in a vehicle luggage compartment into which clips 14 can be inserted to secure articles in position within the luggage compartment. Clips 14 may be attached to specific items to be secured in placed or to a luggage retention device, such as a strap or net.
