A braking device (200) is disclosed for stopping a core barrel assembly in a drill string in a borehole. The braking device comprises a brake retainer (230) with a plurality of brake connector openings (235), a body member (220) with a tapered surface (222) and a plurality of brake elements (234). The brake elements (234) are positioned at least partially within the brake connector openings (235). Relative movement of the body member (220) towards a first end of the brake retainer (230) moves the plurality of brake elements (234) outward and into contact with the drill string. |
