Disclosed is a system for handling network data within an intelligent electronic device (704) that operates within a power protection system including one or more other devices. The system includes a network interface (702), a first-in-first-out (“FIFO”) (708) buffer coupled to the network interface (702) that stores one or more messages (710A-710N) originating from the other devices. Each of the messages (710A-710N) includes a subscription identifier, one or more message buffers (710) each associated with a subscription identifier and a processor operatively associated with the network interface (702), the FIFO, and the one or more message buffers (710). The processor examines a message from the FIFO to determine the subscription identifier therewith associated and routes the message to and storing the message in the buffer associated with the subscription identifier. A processing budget is received for a cycle of subscriptions and one or more of the messages (710A-710N) in the buffers (710) are transferred and processed in a processing group, in accordance with the processing budget. |
