A seismic base isolation building system

A seismic isolation building system is disclosed. The system has at least one structural substrate (2) providing a foundation for a structure, a plurality of piles (4) extending from the substrate into the ground on which the substrate is placed and two plates (1, 3) located between the pile or piles and the substrate. One plate is linked to the substrate (substrate plate - 1) and one further plate is linked to the pile or piles (pile plate - 3). The plates abut each other about inter-linking surfaces, each surface comprising truncated pyramid patterns that nest together. Horizontal sliding movement is prevented up to a prescribed shear force limit and when the prescribed shear force is exceeded, the two plates move apart through both vertical and horizontal movement.
