The disclosure relates to a skin or hide preservation process that is essentially a dry process. The process includes A: determining the water content of the skins; D: processing them using a dry preservation mixture to create processed skins. The dry preservation mixture comprises at least one solid acid with a melting point above 20 degrees celcius and a salt mixture comprising sodium chloride and/or potassium chloride. Wherein the pelt pH is 3.5 or less and the mass of the salt added results in a minimum concentration of 50 g salt mixture per liter of water within the skin. The dry preservation mixture may be in a divided form and may further contain a biocide and/or fungicide. The solid acid may be oxalic acid, benzoic acid, sulfamic acid, sodium hydrogen sulfate (NaHSO4), potassium hydrogen sulfate (KHSO4), malonic acid, fumaric acid, tartaric acid, citric acid or monochloroacetic acid. |
