An optical apparatus (100) is provided with a first substrate (10), a second substrate (20), and an optical layer (30) that is provided between the substrates. The first substrate has a first electrode (11) and a second electrode (12) to which different potentials can be applied. The optical layer (30) includes a medium (31P), and shape anisotropic particles (32) wherein the alignment direction changes corresponding to the direction of an electric field applied to the optical layer. The medium is a liquid crystal material, and the shape anisotropic particles are aligned substantially perpendicular to a substrate surface when an electric field is not applied to the optical layer. |
