This partial discharge detection device (10) detects multiple instances of discharge, calculates a time interval (Ti) of the multiple instances of discharge, and in the event that discharge occurs during a time interval (Ti) that is shorter than a threshold value time (Tth), determines that a partial discharge has occurred within a metal container (2), or in the event that discharge occurs only during a time interval (Ti) that is longer than the threshold value time (Tth), determines that a discharge has occurred outside the metal container (2). Therefore, a partial discharge occurring within the metal container (2) of a gas-insulated switching device (1) can be readily distinguished from a discharge occurring outside the metal container (2).
