[Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXXVI] Apparatus for covering a wire or other core with vulcanizable strip material, whereby two seams are formed in the covering, is provided with means for turning the covered core on its longitudinal axis or the covering on the core, means for applying a second coating to cover the seams of the first and a vulcanizing chamber to cure the insulation. In the construction shown, a plurality of wires &c. 12, supplied from reels 11, are passed through tensioning and straightening devices 13, 14 into a two stage stripping device 20 in which two coatings or coverings of strip rubber, fed from rolls such as 25, 26, are applied by grooved rolls 23, 24, the covered core being then passed through a vulcanizing chamber 40. After the first coating, the covering or the covered core is turned through 90‹ by a rotary member 30 provided with saw-toothed grooves or by a roller 91, Fig. 10, with a corrugated surface 90. The vulcanizing chamber 40 is provided at least at its inlet end with a number of water glands 50, the difference in pressure between any two adjacent glands not exceeding 40 pounds per square inch.
