A non-human animal comprising a polynucleotide encoding a fusion protein comprising a functional domain and an engineered zinc finger polypeptide, the engineered zinc finger polypeptide comprising at least two zinc finger DNA binding domains, wherein at least one zinc finger DNA binding domain comprises a non-naturally occurring recognition helix that has been engineered to bind to a target nucleotide sequence, wherein the engineered zinc finger polypeptide binds to the target nucleotide sequence in a cell in the animal and modulates the expression of a target gene, wherein the target gene comprises an EPO gene or a receptor gene.
