There is disclosed a personal protection system comprising: a body mounted support structure; a medical/surgical protection hood or toga disposed over said support structure, wherein said support structure suspends said hood or toga away from the face of the person wearing said system, the hood or toga including a transparent face shield; a self-contained ventilation assembly for circulating air in said hood or toga, the ventilation assembly having a fan and at least one outlet duct that extends from the fan, the outlet duct having an opening; and a light with a light source including a light emitting head, said light emitting head being attached to said support structure and positioned so as to emit light through the transparent face shield, wherein said light source is positioned so as to be adjacent the ventilation duct opening so that air discharged through the opening flows over the light source. tot
