A tailgate assembly for a tray back utility formed as a load-bearing structure and releasably attached to the tray back by conventional pin hinges and including a centrally located connection assembly accessible from the outside of the tailgate for capturing the upper end of a load-bearing strut extending upwardly from a central chassis frame structure on the utility whereby operative capture of the upper end of the strut assembly by said connection assembly prevents transverse movement of the tailgate in the direction required for its removal from its mounting pins without corresponding transverse movement of the load-bearing strut assembly.
