The invention relates to a method for registering an image using a criterion of similarity based on mutual information. The image to be registered is compared to a plurality of reference representations of an object, each reference representation consisting of a plurality of homogeneous areas. The mutual information between the image to be registered and each reference representation is calculated in all the homogeneous areas (120). The registration is provided by the reference representation corresponding to the highest mutual information (130, 140). The invention is advantageously applied to the navigation aid of an aircraft by readjusting the images obtained by means of a synthetic aperture radar.
