Downhole Tools With Ball Trap

The described embodiments relate to a downhole tool that can capture a ball in a trap to prevent both upwell and downwell movement of the ball. Further, certain embodiments described herein may prevent fluid from flowing past a captured ball in either the upwell or downwell directions. Ball and seat valves incorporating such ball trap assemblies can be used to create a bi-directional plug which prevents fluid flow in either direction when the ball trap is engaged with an appropriately configured ball.

1. A downhole tool comprising:
a housing; a ball configured to engage the downhole tool; and a ball trap moveable within said housing operative to trap a ball and hold pressure flow in either the downwell or upwell directions. Said ball trap comprising a first ball seat and a second ball seat, the first ball seat configured to permit the ball to pass in a first direction and to prevent the ball from passing in the second direction; and the second ball seat configured to prevent the ball from passing in the first direction; wherein, the ball is configured to create a fluid seal against the second ball seat when fluid pressure against the ball exerts a force on the ball in the first direction.
