communicating data using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal having a first number of bits per symbol of data modulating a carrier tracking subcarrier of a plurality of subcarriers of the OFDM signal and numbers of bits per symbol of data modulating the other subcarriers of the plurality of subcarriers, wherein the first number of bits per symbol is based on a performance estimate for the carrier tracking subcarrier and a number of bits that provides a first target performance margin, and wherein the numbers of bits per symbol are based on corresponding performance estimates for the other subcarriers and corresponding numbers of bits that provide a second target performance margin. |
