DISPLAY APPARATUS AND VARIABLE LENS ARRAY

A display apparatus includes: a display unit that displays a two-dimensional image; and a variable lens array disposed to face the display unit, wherein the variable lens array includes a variable phase difference layer that receives incident linearly polarized light polarized in a first direction and allows the linearly polarized light polarized in the same direction to exit or allows linearly polarized light polarized in a second direction switched from the first direction and different therefrom to exit, and an optically anisotropic layer that receives the light having exited out of the variable phase difference layer and works as a lens array for one of the light polarized in the first direction and the light polarized in the second direction whereas working as a transparent layer for the other light.

1. A display apparatus comprising:
a display unit that displays a two-dimensional image; and a variable lens array disposed to face the display unit, the variable lens array including:
a variable phase difference layer including a first liquid crystal layer; andan optically anisotropic layer including a second liquid crystal layer, wherein, when the variable phase difference layer receives incident linearly polarized light polarized in a first direction, the variable phase difference layer allows the linearly polarized light polarized in the same direction to exit, or the variable phase difference layer allows linearly polarized light polarized in a second direction switched from the first direction and different therefrom to exit by controlling an orientation of the first liquid crystal layer by applying a voltage to the first liquid crystal layer; the optically anisotropic layer that receives the light having exited out of the variable phase difference layer and works as a lens array for one of the light polarized in the first direction and the light polarized in the second direction, and a refractive index of the second liquid crystal layer that works as the lens array for the one of the light is different from a refractive index of the second liquid crystal layer for the other one of the light.
