Provided are an object detecting method using an image characteristic-based division technique and an image processing apparatus applying the same. The object detecting method according to an embodiment of the present invention divides an image into a plurality of division areas on the basis of characteristics of an image and detects an object on the basis of the division areas. The method can increase the success rate in object detection and can achieve object detection at a very fast speed since the method does not employ a scheme of scanning the entire image by a window.
