<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map display device and a map display method capable of displaying a map such that a road name does not overlap with a road link even when the map is displayed in a rotated manner. <P>SOLUTION: The map display device for displaying a map image of the vicinity of an own-vehicle location comprises: display means; memory means that stores map data including road data and road name data related to the display of a road name; and map display control means that determines whether or not a road name overlaps with a road link when displayed based on a map rotation angle relative to a north-up display and an overlap display indicator indicating whether or not the display of a road name included in the road data overlaps with a road link, and displays on a screen of the display means a road name determined as not overlapping.
