<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external flash device that responds to various operations for which software control is suitable, emits light with a small time lag for light emitting command when the accuracy of the timing of light emission is required, and has small possibility of malfunction due to the external situation. <P>SOLUTION: When the external flash device is mounted to a camera, the external flash device is connected to the camera communicably. When the external flash device is not set to an RC mode, the external flash device does not function as a commander flash device. In this case, when a signal from the camera is recognized with software by a control circuit IC1, the light emission is controlled. When the external flash device is set to the RC mode, the external flash device functions as the commander flash device.
