473,945. Locking steering-wheels to prevent unauthorized use. CASEY, jun., C. Feb. 10, 1937, No. 3949. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1936. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A permutation lock for locking the steering- wheel of a car consists of a series of coaxial rotatable discs 5 formed with arcuate slots 6 concentric with the axis, said slots being widened at one point 7 to permit of longitudinal movement of the locking pin L when the discs 5 are correctly set. The lock itself is rigidly attached to a fixed central rod M and the pin L engages with a socket member 14 attached to a tubular steering column M'. A modification in which the rod M is rigidly attached to the steering column and the pin L passes through a keyhole slot formed in a flange attached to the column casing is described. A further modification in which the rod M is rigidly attached to the steering column and the pin L co-operates with a keyhole slot in a bracket rigidly attached to the vehicle is also described. In all the above modifications the lock is located in a recess formed above the boss of the steering-wheel and a metal bowl is welded in position around the socket element in order to protect it from interference. If desired, the discs 5 may be illuminated by an electric lamp.
