<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a long detectable period of particulates using a particulate sensor. <P>SOLUTION: The particulate collecting filter 5 and an accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 on the downstream thereof are disposed in an exhaust passage 3. As particulate matter (particulate) accumulates in the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6, an output current value of the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 nonlinearly increases. When the amount of the particulates accumulated in the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 reaches a predetermined amount, power is supplied to a regeneration electrode 13 provided in the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6, and in turn, the particulates accumulated in the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 are removed to have the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 regenerated. The regeneration of the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 occurs within such a range that the accumulation-type particulate sensor 6 can detect the particulates.
