<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable switching of the valve operation state between a normal lift operation state and a valve open state while alleviating the load acting on a magnetic viscous fluid in a variable valve system and an internal combustion engine comprising the same. <P>SOLUTION: The rocker arm type intake variable valve system 30 includes a lash adjuster 58 filled with an MRF. This system includes a cam profile formed so as to have the distance from the rotation center of an intake camshaft 54 longer from the zero lift point C toward the maximum lift point A. This system is constituted so that a plunger 60 of the lash adjuster 58 may begin to shrink before a valve spring 50 when a driving cam 56 rotates from the zero lift point C, and an intake valve 36 may start to open after having the plunger 60 shrunk down to the transition from the zero lift point C to a normal lift starting point D in a state that the magnetic force is not applied to the MRF.
