569,062. Chucks. SMALLPIECE, C. D. P. Dec. 10, 1943, No. 20661. [Class 83 (iii)] A lathe &c. chuck is operated by a draw-bar 27, as from a fluid-pressure cylinder on the end remote from the chuck. The draw-bar is slotted to engage one end 26 of a bell-crank 24 pivoted at 25 on a block 12 slidable in a transverse slot in the chuck body 11. The other end of the crank engages a slot in a jaw 18 sliding radially in the block 12, which also carries an adjustably fixed jaw 15. A centre 21 is carried by a plate screwed to the chuck body. A spring ball engages a V-notch in the block 12 to bias its initial position. Frictional material may be interposed between the block 12 and the chuck body 11 so that when closing pressure has been applied, the floating movement of the slide is restrained. The draw-bar may be spring-biassed towards the open position and may carry the centre so that end thrust on the work from the tail-stock operates to close the chuck. In this form, the bar extends into the spindle only sufficiently to ensure adequate guiding. |
