A method for emulating an X-ray scanning machine of the type used at an airport to screen for prohibited items (208, figure 2) carried in baggage (210, figure 2) or cargo. The method comprises receiving raw X-ray image data for a scanned object and processing this data to identify different types of material in the scanned object. Intermediate image data is then generated that encodes the types of material identified at the processing step and is received by an emulator application. At the emulator 404, the user selects an X-ray machine to be emulated, selected from a group comprising at least two different types of X-ray machines, each X-ray machine using a different representation scheme for generating images from raw X-ray image data. Simulated image data is then displayed on the selected X-ray machine. The emulator (604, figure 6) may be a web-based client (602, figure 6), web-browser plug-in, or implemented as an application for a smartphone or tablet. A pre-processing unit (606, figure 6) for processing raw X-ray data prior to being received at the emulator is also disclosed. |
