The at least one resonant membrane can comprise at least one weight. The at least one resonant membrane can have an anti-resonant frequency and the support structure with the weight can provide wide frequency band gaps between odd resonance modes while suppressing structure-membrane coupled modes to enable the anti-resonance of the at least one resonant membrane.

1. A structure for blocking acoustic wave energy, the structure comprising:
a support structure defining a plurality of cells; and at least one resonant membrane covering one of the plurality of cells, wherein the at least one resonant membrane comprises at least one weight, and wherein the at least one resonant membrane has an anti-resonant frequency; wherein the support structure has principal odd resonant frequencies that exceed the anti-resonant frequency of the at least one resonant membrane.
