PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terahertz wave detection device and a method for reducing terahertz wave introduction loss, generating and propagating detection signal light in the same direction as that of excitation light, increasing an interaction range of the excitation light and the detection signal light, and sharply raising conversion efficiency.SOLUTION: A terahertz wave detection device comprises: a slant periodic domain polarization inversion element 12 having an incident surface 12a and an emission surface 12b in parallel with each other, and a light receiving side surface 12c orthogonal to the incident surface 12a and the emission surface 12b; an excitation light source 14 which vertically makes excitation light 1 incident on the incident surface 12a; and a photodetector 16 which detects terahertz waves 3 from detection signal light A vertically emitted from the emission surface 12b. The slant periodic domain polarization inversion element 12 is constituted so as to generate the detection signal light A in parallel in the same direction as that of the excitation light 1 by pseudo phase matching between the terahertz waves 3 to be vertically made incident from the light receiving side surface 12c and the excitation light 1. |
