PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, exhibiting excellent rate characteristics and cycle characteristics, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a positive electrode using the positive electrode active material.SOLUTION: A positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains at least one or more oxides selected from the group consisting of oxides represented by the following formula (I) and oxides represented by the following formula (II), and contains 10 ppm or more and 1,000 ppm or less, per one element, of at least one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Si, Fe and Cr, relative to the mass of the positive electrode active material. (I) LiMO(in the formula (I), M represents one or more metal elements, and x satisfies -0.2<x<0.3.)
