PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an infrared detector capable of more accurately determining the existence of a detection object, and a detection method using the same.SOLUTION: An infrared detector 101 includes: a pyroelectric type infrared sensor 11 that detects a change in the amount of infrared in a detection area 1 to output a detection signal 21; a thermopile type infrared sensor 12 that detects the amount of infrared in the detection area 1 to output a detection signal 22; and a signal processing circuit 16. The signal processing circuit 16 detects the presence of the detection signal 21 to detect the ingress and exit of a detection object 2 to and from the detection area 1 and the existence of the detection object 2 in the detection area 1 based on the state of the detection signal 22 when the detection signal 21 is generated.
