PURPOSE: A video encoding method, a device thereof, a video decoding method, and a device thereof are provided to efficiently decode image data depending on the encoding mode and the size of an encoding unit adaptively determined for an image feature using information on an optimal encoding mode transmitted from an encoding terminal. CONSTITUTION: A receiving unit(210) receives and parses a bit stream for an encoded image. A processor(220) extracts maximum encoding unit size information, an encoding depth for encoding units of the image, and information on an encoding mode from the bit stream. A decoding unit(230) determines encoding units depending on the tree structure using the information on the encoding mode, encoding depth, and encoding unit size information. The decoding unit decodes the image based on the determined encoding units.
