PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a light deflector using KTN crystal, in that: in the case of the KTN crystal whose trap density is extremely high, electrons injected from a cathode are all trapped within the range of a certain distance from the cathode, consequently, almost no residual charges are present near the center of a crystal in the thickness direction (electric field direction) thereof, and, even when light is made incident on an area near the center of a crystal, the light can hardly be deflected; and a crystal that is extremely large in the number of traps is unsatisfactory in the characteristic of a light deflector, resulting in a decrease in the yield of the light deflector.SOLUTION: In order to solve a problem in that a deflection angle decreases, a light deflector according to the invention emits light different from incident light, to an area almost the center of one of end faces of an electro-optical crystal in an electric field direction, during at least part of a period of time that a trap charge voltage is applied. The light deflector is achieved, which has a satisfactory deflection characteristic even where light is made incident on an area near the center of a crystal. A driving method for the light deflector is also provided. |
