Video Encoding/Decoding Apparatus and Method by Using Prediction Possibility of Intra Prediction Mode

PURPOSE: A video encoding/decoding apparatus and method using the prediction possibility of an intra prediction mode are provided to improve the performance of compression by minimizing the amount of bit for encoding information in an intra prediction mode. CONSTITUTION: A video encoding/decoding apparatus using the prediction possibility of an intra prediction mode comprises a mode information extraction unit (1210), a prediction mode determining unit (1220), a prediction mode extraction unit (1230), and a decoding unit (1240). If the mode information extracted from the mode information extraction unit indicates a first encoding mode, the prediction mode determining unit determines one among multiple intra prediction modes of a present block. If the mode information indicates a second encoding mode and prediction mode identification information is contained in the mode information, the prediction mode extraction unit determines the intra prediction mode of the present block using the prediction mode identification information. The decoding unit restores residual blocks from the encoded data and adds the prediction blocks generated according to the determined intra prediction mode to the residual blocks.
